According to Google in the thick of it means “being deeply involved in the most active, intense, or dangerous part of a situation or activity.” [1] Which “implies that one is fully involved in an activity and not merely a bystander or spectator. If someone who is not involved becomes involved, then they move ‘into’ the thick of it.” [2]
Recently I’ve been exposed to two gun violence incidents of women shooting themselves in the head, including the Secretary of my NA meeting. This deeply traumatized me having been close to one of the women attending meetings weekly a small group of women meeting each week. She was over a year sober and had recently lost her job and started dating again. The gun that was used belonged to her boyfriend at the time. How I wish I could’ve been there for her, you never know what anyone is going through she was always so positive and bubbly she even asked me to speak and lead a meeting once.
As someone who used to volunteer for Brady I decided to contact San Diegans Against Gun Violence and have been invited to attend their monthly meetings. I think that would help moving forward to cope with these losses. Suicide is a real thing that affects not just me but everyone.
San Diegans Against Gun Violence suggests “Feeling overwhelmed by the whirlwind of events happening around us? You’re not alone! In times like these, it’s more important than ever to connect with our community and lift each other’s spirits.”
