If I could summarize 2023 into one word it would be “hectic.” I’m sure it’s not the same for everyone. It always feels like I’m trying to get from point A to point B and barely making it then starting over again along my path in life. I’m hoping that in 2024 I actually get to the end of reaching some of my goals. Whether that’s working on a book, building my blog, finishing treatment sober.
Let’s start with reminding ourselves to recite affirmations “saying affirmations can help you refocus on your goals and create feelings of optimism or a positive mindset.” [1] Why affirmations? “Affirmations are short, simple statements that validate and encourage us. They can increase motivation and help us persevere. They also help us focus our time, energy, and thoughts on what’s most important to us.” [2]
With 2024 around the corner why not come up with a list of affirmations instead of resolutions. Why not? “resolutions can often lead to feelings of guilt or shame when people don’t stick with them.” [3] “Unfulfilled resolutions can end up spiraling into negative thoughts, which can lead to beating ourselves up and even self-sabotage.” [4]
Practicing gratitude can help you to avoid being brought down by negative thoughts. In addition to reciting affirmations and mantras to help boost you into gear toward a more positive mindset. Focus on “self-discovery and growth” and avoid the constant need to fix yourself, learn to accept yourself as you are. Give yourself “permission to believe in your own worth.” [5] Teach yourself to be deserving of what you want in life. Even if things don’t go as planned, “mantras help us to reframe challenges and remind us to keep going.” [6] -I hope that 2023 taught you many wonderful life lessons and that 2024 continues to be a great learning experience too.
