My sober journey began when I started college at CU Boulder when I stopped smoking weed. I used to be an athlete and played club soccer including my freshman year in college. I lived in the engineering quad. We would travel on weekends all over Colorado so just didn’t drink or smoke weed. I didn’t officially become sober until after my senior year when I turned 21 I quickly fell into addiction trying cocaine and then went to out patient rehab less than 6 months later at Boulder Community Hospital. By the time I was applying for Law School I should’ve known to stay sober and that’s probably how I ended up having my first bipolar episode while living in West Hollywood and was hospitalized at UCLA. I started law school June just 5 months later.
It wasn’t until 2013 that mental health really became a problem for me and that’s when I officially got sober. Getting in trouble didn’t help, but sometimes you get pushed to do things when you have fewer options in life. I was struggling in the previous law school I attended and decided to switch school and apply to another law school, where I ended up doing better at. If you’re not focused on the right things drinking can quickly derail you from completing your goals in life and making progress. And that’s what I experienced because of drank and suffered from mental health issues I didn’t end up finishing my JD and struggled with my health. Who knows had I stayed sober maybe I would be an Attorney today.
2017 was one of the hardest years for me in sobriety it’s when I started to suffer from voices. This is when it first became clear that adderrall was not going to help me with my condition and was encouraged against taking the med and suggested to take Vyvanse instead. And so I struggled and wound up also self harming which started 2015, upon applying for jobs. You will face many hurdles and challenges in life but learn to love yourself in the process no matter how stressful life gets don’t give up.
By 2023 I’m officially off adderrall and not taking any stimulants and I’m also not drinking which I did a pretty good job of throughout my life. Where to go from here? I’ve got a lot of step work to do and hope to continue to learn more about myself in the process of staying sober and sharing with you all along my journey in life. Take care and look forward to writing tomorrow.
