Title: Communicating Courageously

Hear, Be Heard, and Connect in Your Closest Relationships

By: Deborah H. Stern, Psy.D

This book teaches healthy and effective communication skills by helping the reader to understand themselves. In the process of using what she calls the “Share Hear Care Model,” shows that practicing these strategies, helps people to repair some of their most important relationships and keep them strong and connected. She discusses the challenges we all face “as we strive to communicate more effectively.” “Understanding ourselves and our loved ones, [while] finding and maintaining connection open, honest, mindful, and courageous communication.” She describes how “lack of communication or destructive communication can sever or damage the deep connections people form.” She describes the importance of forming bonds that are “needed to sustain long-term relationships” emphasizing that “care must be taken to keep them intact.” She also discusses the “cycle of poor communication,” occurring when there is unmitigated conflict, chronic distance in relationships, and the damage that is done to loving connections or any type of closeness. When people are hurt in conflict, “they shut down or attack one another, furthering the pain and distance between them.” This is a great book on the different styles of communication. This book is an “invaluable resource that will inspire and equip you to strengthen your most important relationships.”
