Why do we cry …

That immense overwhelm of falling apart at the seems, we cry. That feeling of loss, we cry. That person we love and can’t be with, we cry. Could even be a breakup or proposal we cry over. Doing our best but can’t achieve a desired result, we cry. Crying is a process, we reflect on the past or a current situation and grieve. It’s a time to be reminded of situations similar that evoke a response from us in the form of tears.

According to Google, “Crying helps process sadness, pain, and stress rather than holding it in.” [1]  “Some techniques used to help you cry are:” listening to a song or watching a movie, journaling, looking at old photos, remembering loved ones, or focusing on past heartbreaks and losses. [2]

Why is crying good for us? Crying is “a healthy, necessary release that lowers stress hormones, boosts immunity, and processes repressed emotions.” [3] It’s a physical expression to a “heart-opening” experience in life it can also help us to “release pent-up emotions.” [4] “Crying helps process sadness, pain, and stress rather than holding it in.” [5] It “releases emotional stress, and communicates distress or a need for social bonding.” [6]

I remember living in Boulder, CO and being alone. I would cry myself to sleep at night lonely. I remember when my Dad was dying of cancer crying everyday. And I am currently overcoming crying everyday while in treatment. Sometimes it’s just detoxifying emotions that we hold within us. Out with the bad and in with the good. You can’t go backwards in time and make up for lost time but you can move forward be thankful for the good times and remember what was and not what could’ve been. There are no could’ve would’ves should’ves in life we just have to accept the present. Furthermore, “ways to deal with crying are to seek support from a licensed therapist.” [7]
